A SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE
A Sunday Kind of Love
The singer Mary Ellen Desmond, with whom I have the frequent pleasure to work, introduced me to A Sunday Kind of Love, a languidly lovely standard that I’d somehow missed. (She said that she first learned it when she was asked, somewhat surprisingly, to sing it at a wedding! Listening to it though, it rather works in its modest, albeit secular, way.)
Written in 1946 by Barbara Belle, Anita Leonard, Stan Rhodes and Louie Prima, A Sunday Kind of Love was recorded by several singers including Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and my favorite, Jo Stafford.
You can hear the Jo Stafford version on you tube, or better yet, come by L2 in Philadelphia sometime and hear Mary Ellen sing it live. In the meantime, here is a piano/bass version to acquaint you, or maybe, reacquaint with the song. Click above to hear it.
I want a Sunday kind of love,
A love to last pat Saturday night.
I’d like to know it’s more than love at first site
I want a Sunday kind of love.
I want a love that’s on the square
Can’t seem to find somebody to care
I’m on a lonely road that leads me nowhere
I want a Sunday kind of love.
Bridge:
I do my Sunday dreaming and all my Sunday scheming
Every minute, every hour of the day.
I’m hoping to discover a certain kind of lover
Who will show me the way.
My arms need someone to enfold
To keep me warm when Mondays are cold
A love for all my life to have and to hold
I want a Sunday kind of love.
