Past Weekly Tunes in Alphabetical Order
When I started this website decades ago, MIDI and the digital revolution had made it possible to do passable music recordings at home, without the expense and bother (and added pressure) of hiring a proper recording studio.
I had no experience with the computerized recording programs, but I had a keyboard and thought it would be fun to learn this new-fangled stuff. Because I was a beginner at all of this and not technically fluent, the quality of these recordings varies widely. None of them is really first rate, but I let them go because I thought of this as a sort of exercise, a sketch book, a place to try out different things.
Since all pianists in this style are perforce arrangers – every tune one plays is one’s own sense of how it should be – it was especially enjoyable to be able to bring on virtually any other instrument in synthesized form. Strings, brass, saxes etc., they were all at my fingertips so as I gained some skills I tried to add them in. The process brought me back to my high school band camp days, listening to the various sectional rehearsals and then hearing how they all came together. Eventually, I asked some singer friends to participate. It was a fun aspect of my life at the time. The results are below.
