I’d been hoping since I started these weekly tunes to have my son, Clint, do one and finally this week, when he was in Philadelphia from Boston for a few days, we got a moment to record.  Clint chose Time After Time, written in 1947 by Jule Styne, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn.

Apparently it was done for Frank Sinatra in the movie It Happened in Brooklyn.  Since then it has become a worthy standard and has been recorded by all sorts of people.  Clint first heard the song through Chet Baker, the bop trumpeter who – like a lot of jazz instrumentalists, Louis Armstrong, Nat Cole and Diana Krall among them – became equally admired as a singer.  Clint recommends Baker’s album Chet Baker Sings, if you don’t know it.

Since Clint knows the song through Chet Baker and can do a nice imitation of Baker’s smooth, ultra-laid back style, we are nodding to him stylistically here, with piano, bass, drums and a muted trumpet.  On the second verse we kicked up the tempo a bit.
